A dental implant is a multi-step procedure. The total time can vary from person to person, depending on their oral health and healing speed. Some people may finish in a few months, while others might take longer. In this blog, we will discuss how long a dental implant procedure generally takes!
Step 1: Consultation and Planning
The process starts with a dental check-up. The dentist looks at your teeth, gums, and jawbone to see if you can get an implant. This includes X-rays or 3D scans. These tests help the dentist make a treatment plan just for you. This step may take 1 or 2 visits over a few weeks. If you need other treatments like a tooth pulled or bone added to your jaw, the dentist will plan for that too.
Step 2: Tooth Removal and Bone Graft (if needed)
If you have a damaged tooth, it will be taken out first. If your jawbone is too thin or weak, you may need a bone graft. This helps build up the bone so it can hold the implant. After a bone graft, you may need to wait 3 to 6 months for it to heal before the next step.
Step 3: Placing the Implant
Next, the dentist puts a small metal post (implant) into your jawbone. This acts like the root of a tooth. It usually takes 1 to 2 hours per implant. You will be awake but numb during the surgery. If you are getting more than one implant, the time will be longer.
Step 4: Healing Time (Osseointegration)
After the implant is placed, your jawbone needs time to heal and grow around it. This is called osseointegration. It makes the implant strong and stable. Healing usually takes 3 to 6 months, but for some people, it can take up to 9 months.
Step 5: Adding the Abutment and Crown
Once healing is done, the dentist places a small connector piece called an abutment on top of the implant. After your gums heal around it, the dentist will take impressions to make a custom crown (or bridge/denture) that looks like your real tooth. This step usually takes 1 or 2 more visits over a few weeks.
What Is The Total Time?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer as to how long a dental implant procedure takes. For some, it may take a few months, and some may stretch over a year. Time can fluctuate based on several factors, like:
- Your overall oral health
- If you need a tooth pulled
- If a bone graft is needed
- How fast your body heals
- Total number of implants
Overall Insight
A dental implant procedure can take up to several months or a year to complete. Each step from the consultation to adding abutment and crown takes time, especially the healing phases, which are important for the success of the implant.
